“I’m sure it wasn’t as bad as you think.” Eric said as he bounced Brooklyn on his knee, causing her to giggle.

Imogen rolled her eyes in response, crossing her arms as she leaned back on the couch.

“You weren’t there.” She muttered glumly, reaching for the TV remote and turning the news off. She was sick of the background noise of death and war and destruction. The world was fucked but she had learned that years ago.

“I know, I’m sorry.” Eric sighed, looking over at her. “This Annie thing has taken over the whole paper. We got this anonymous tip last night.”

Imogen was distracted from her annoyance at the phrase the Annie thing by his next admission. She sat up a little, looking over at him. “What do you mean?”

Eric shrugged. “There was a message taped to the front door of the offices last night. Nikki was working late and found it.”

“What kind of message? From who?” Imogen pushed, aware she should probably reign it in a little but the words anonymous and message were spinning around in her head. Still, the second question came out as if he would magically be able to give her a name.

“No idea.” He shrugged, seeming a bit too calm for her liking but she knew he didn’t have the same knowledge she did. “It was just something about knowing who killed Annie.”

Imogen frowned. So whoever was texting her was spilling out into the rest of her world now? Spreading around town like an infectious disease.

“I’m getting those messages too.” Imogen found herself saying, without even really meaning to.

“What?” Eric’s gaze snapped to her face, frowning. “What do you mean?”

Well, there was no going back now, was there? Imogen sighed, shaking her head. “After… the funeral.” She watched Eric’s expression, trying to read him. “I started getting texts from some number telling me they knew who hurt Annie.”

Eric was staring at her like she’d just punched his mother in the face which, honestly, she wouldn’t mind doing sometimes. “Are… are you serious? Imogen…” He was sort of speechless. “Can I see?”

Imogen shrugged. There was no point in hiding it now, was there? She reached for her phone and opened the message thread.

Eric took the phone from her and read the messages, letting Brooklyn slide into the space between the two of them on the couch.

Imogen watched him, feeling like she was going to throw up.

“You need to go to the police.” Eric said, looking up at her.

She shook her head. “No, it’s… look, they’ll just say it’s a prank.” She said, “and if it’s not, whoever is sending me these, whoever knows something, might get spooked if I go to the cops… then I’ll never know.”

Eric stared at her and she could tell he thought she was insane. That she was being ridiculous. Eric had always been a straight-laced, follow-the-rules kind of guy. Imogen was flighty and impulsive and a little bizarre. They sort of tamed each other in different ways but sometimes she knew he thought she was immature or just plain wrong.
